It’s August and I Miss My Board

Updated August 9, 2025

It’s weird, isn’t it? Summer hits and suddenly everything feels wrong. The board’s sitting in the corner like an abandoned pet. The wax job from April still clinging on.

I’m over here scrolling through old GoPro clips in desperation.

Normally by now, Michael and I would be in the southern hemisphere. New Zealand, maybe Chile if we’re lucky, or just chasing slushy park laps somewhere far from home. But this year? Life. We just haven’t made it happen yet.

Of course, there’s always some excuse. Work, family, flights that cost more than a second-hand car. But normally we push through regardless.

And the thing is, I feel it in my bones when I’m not riding.

Everything’s a bit slower, a bit less fun. I end up watching terrible riding edits on YouTube and convincing myself I could definitely still land a frontside 540, even though my last attempt ended up costing me a few teeth.

Do you feel that too? Like you lose a piece of yourself in the off-season? What do you do with it? Some people skateboard. Some mountain bike. I just started running, which I wanted to like. But I don’t think it scratches the same itch. There’s nothing like that first carve on cold, crisp snow. Nothing even comes close.

We’re hoping to still sneak a trip in later this year. Maybe not a full southern hemisphere season, but something to break up this weird stretch of waiting.

Do you guys chase snow year-round? Or do you use summer to reset?

Anyway, I’ll stop rambling now. Guess I’ll go on another run. Wish me luck…
