Hertel Super Hotsauce Ski Wax is an absolute all-temp classic. Don’t let the old-school packaging fool you. This stuff has truly earned its reputation.

I’ve used it countless times and always come away impressed by the rapid and reliable performance. It also holds up longer than most, even in icy and slushy conditions (which are notoriously wax-stripping).

They do also make a supposedly supercharged version “Hertel Cream of Da Crop”. I was excited to try it last season but honestly didn’t notice a massive upgrade from the classic formula. Certainly not worth the significant price hike (sorry Hertel).

I guess thats really a testament to the quality and value of the regular HotSauce wax.

If you just want a great all-rounder at a great price, congrats, no need to read the rest of the article!

Pros

  • True all-temp performance
  • Works in almost all snow types
  • Lasts (way) longer than most waxes
  • Huge 340g block offers great value
  • Biodegradable and eco-friendly
  • Trusted brand with decades in the game

Cons

  • Packaging looks dated
  • Not as quick in very warm spring slush

We proudly offer a full range of performance-driven ski and snowboard waxes hand-poured in the USA.

Easily one of the top ski waxes this season, the PURL Purple Brick delivers excellent value. You get a generous amount of wax for a very reasonable price. Mine lasted nearly an entire season (your mileage will vary depending on how often you wax).

Hertel still edges it out as our best overall pick thanks to its wider temperature range, but if you want a true all-temp formula that’s eco-friendly, biodegradable and non-toxic, PURL is a winner. It glides well in almost every condition you’ll actually ski in, and the fact it comes from a small, family-run company in the USA makes it even more rewarding to support.

If Hertel is the tank of ski waxes, PURL is the versatile daily driver you can trust all winter.

Pros

  • Great all-temp performance for everyday skiing
  • Temperature range covers most winter conditions (8 °F to 32 °F)
  • Fluorocarbon-free and biodegradable
  • Fast glide with a smooth, predictable feel
  • Made in the USA
  • Nice balance of performance and price

Cons

  • Not as durable as Hertel on multi-day trips
  • Performance drops off in extreme cold or warm spring snow

3. IGOSKI Ski Wax Best Budget Ski Wax

IGOSKI Ski Wax for Snowboard 180g – Universal Glide Wax for Optimal Performance in Any Condition(White Color)
  • IGOSKI high quality universal ski wax for skis or snowboards
  • If you're unsure exactly which wax to use for the day, this is a good wax for your board, Glides well in most snow conditions and temperature ranges
  • Non-Fluoro; Wax iron temp; for all template。

The IGOSKI Universal Ski Wax is my budget lifesaver. I’ve kept a block of this in my tuning kit for years, mostly for those days when I can’t be bothered checking the forecast or digging through temp-specific waxes.

It’s non-fluoro, melts in easy with a regular wax iron and glides well in just about anything from cold corduroy to spring slush. Not the absolute fastest wax I’ve ever used, certainly not a patch on Hertel. But for the price it’s ridiculously hard to complain.

Pros

  • Super affordable
  • Universal temp range works for most casual skiers
  • Easy to apply
  • Good backup or travel wax when you’re unsure of conditions

Cons

  • Doesn’t last as long as premium waxes
  • Performance is decent, but not race-level fast
  • Not as temperature-specific as some other waxes

4. Swix Speed Brick North Wax Best Cold-Temp Wax

Swix Speed Brick Freeride North Wax, 180g, Blue
  • North waxes allow you to have a great experience on snow

  • 180 gram cold formula is best when the mercury drops below 21 degrees and in cold smoke powder
  • Powered by Swix and trusted by the worlds best freeride ski and snowboarders
  • Don't settle for cheep waxes making bold claims North is real wax and will keep you sliding fast and smooth

Swix has been a giant in the wax world for decades. Their sister brand, North, brings that same expertise to freeride-focused gear.

The North Blue Freeride Speed Brick is easily one of the best cold-weather waxes. It delivers fast, reliable performance in frigid temps. Just keep in mind that the block is a bit smaller than some of the competitors, though the quality makes up for it.

Pros

  • Outstanding performance in cold, dry snow
  • Fast glide even on squeaky midwinter powder
  • Holds up for multiple days
  • Designed specifically for freeride and backcountry use
  • Good value for a specialty wax

Cons

  • Smaller supply than Purl/Hertel
  • Overkill for casual resort skiing in average temps
  • Not ideal for warmer or mixed conditions

5. PURL Yellow Brick Warm-Temp Ski Wax Best Warm-Temp Wax

Purl - Yellow, 1lb Wax Brick - Warm Spring Ski and Snowboard Wax - High Humidity Wax - Non Toxic - No Fluoros - for Snowboards & Skis
  • WARM WEATHER WAX: Spring ski and snowboard wax! Designed to make your ride fast for as long as possible, Purl Wax Yellow is a spring wax blend ideal for high humidity conditions, suitable for optimal glide with springtime snow temps 20° F to 35° F. This warm weather wax provides a fast, superior glide and durability even as the temperature rises. For added speed in dirty spring snow, blend with our black graphite wax!

  • HOW TO APPLY: Hot waxing application! Wax 101: Using a ski-waxing iron (not included), hold the Purl Warm Spring wax block against the hot iron to melt (approx. 230°F*). With iron always moving, use the drip-on or crayon-on method to apply the wax.
  • PURL WAX: Committed to performance and the environment! A Colorado Company, family-owned and operated since 1999, Purl Wax was founded to accelerate the transition to eco-friendly, fluoro-free ski and snowboard waxes. We proudly offer a full range of performance-driven ski and snowboard waxes hand-poured in the USA.

If you’re skiing in spring or anywhere the snow’s been sitting in the sun, this is the PURL you want. The Yellow Warm Brick is built for soft, wet snow and actually manages to feel quick instead of sticky.

Like the much-loved purple version, it’s non-toxic, biodegradable and fluorine-free, so you’re not leaving behind a chemical soup. It irons in easily, smells decent and holds up surprisingly well for a warm-temp wax.

It’s not going to turn sloppy spring crud into hero snow, but if you’re hitting park laps or slushy mogul runs, it’s about as good as it gets.

Pros

  • Excellent glide in warm, slushy snow
  • Non-toxic, biodegradable, and fluorine-free
  • Easy to apply and work with
  • Long-lasting for a warm-temp wax
  • Made in the USA

Cons

  • Useless in cold or dry snow
  • Not as fast as race-specific warm waxes

6. Swix Red Ski Racing Wax

Sale
Swix Bio Degradable Ski/Snowboard Average Temperature Wax (180g Bar) , Red
  • New biodegradable ski and snowboard wax from Swix
  • UR8 wax works best from 14 degrees to 36 degrees fahrenheit
  • Best for all skis and snowboards
  • Apply with an iron for best results
  • The best environment and user friendly wax on the market

If the Swix Speed Brick Blue is your cold-day weapon, the Swix UR8 Red is the one you break out when temps creep up. It’s ideal for that 14°F to 36°F range where a true cold wax starts to feel sticky.

I’ve found it runs noticeably quicker in mild winter conditions compared to all-temp waxes like Hertel or PURL. I like it because it’s fast, consistent and kinder to the environment than most race waxes.

Keep this in the kit for those middle-of-the-season days when you want a little extra oomph.

Pros

  • Excellent glide in typical mid-winter and spring conditions
  • Way more environmentally friendly than most racing wax
  • Easy to work with using a standard wax iron
  • Consistent quality from a highly trusted brand

Cons

  • Best in moderate temps, not as strong in extreme cold or heat
  • Smaller bar compared to competitors
  • Traditional racing wax is a little faster (but terrible for the planet)

Demon United’s Hyper Wax Block is perfect for skiers who want high performance without breaking the bank. With a large-sized block at such great value, you’re all set for dozens of wax sessions.

Okay it doesn’t quite have the performance of HotSauce or PURL. But it does a very good job for this price point.

Pros

  • Massive 1 lb (454g) block is incredible value
  • Universal temperature range covers most days
  • Great in most snow conditions
  • Good for bulk waxing sessions or multiple pairs of skis
  • Solid choice for clubs, families, or high-mileage skiers

Now, it’s not a substitute for a full hot wax, but when you’re short on time – or just feeling lazy – it’s a real game changer.

Just a heads up: even if you use rub-on wax regularly, I still suggest doing a proper hot wax every few weeks to keep your skis in shape.

  • Insanely quick and easy to apply
  • No iron needed — perfect for travel or last-minute top-ups
  • Compact and fits easily in a pocket or pack
  • Works well as a speed boost between hot waxes

Ski Wax Buying Guide

I’ve stood exactly where you are. Staring down shelves (or tabs) full of wax and wondering, which one actually works?

So I made this simple breakdown to cut through the noise and help you find the right ski wax for your next trip .

1. Why Wax Your Skis?

Waxing reduces friction and keeps your skis gliding fast, especially in changing snow conditions. It also protects your bases from drying out or getting damaged. Even a basic wax job can make a huge difference in how your skis perform.

2. Match the Wax to the Snow Temp

Different waxes work better in different temperatures:

  • Cold Temp Wax: Ideal for frigid, powdery days (below 20°F / -6°C).

  • Warm Temp Wax: Designed for slushy spring snow (above 32°F / 0°C).

  • Universal/All Temp Wax: Perfect if you’re unsure of the weather or want something simple that covers most conditions. Won’t outperform Cold/Warm wax at the extremes though.

Ski Wax Temperature Chart

Pick your wax based on snow temperature. If in doubt, go universal.

Snow Temp (°F) Wax Type
Above 25° Warm
Below 25° Cold
All Temps Universal

3. Rub-On vs. Hot Wax

  • Rub-On Wax: Fast and easy—just rub it on and go. Great for quick fixes.

  • Hot Wax: Lasts longer, skis better. You’ll need an iron and some extra time, but it’s worth it.

Personally, I always go hot wax before a full ski trip and bring a rub-on bar for emergencies.

4. Eco-Friendly Options Matter

Look for biodegradable, fluoro-free waxes if you want performance and planet-friendly ingredients. Brands like PURL and MountainFLOW make great green alternatives.

5. Brand Tips

Big names like Swix, Toko, and Hertel make excellent waxes. But I’ve had great luck with some lesser-known eco brands too. Reviews and real-world feedback matter more than fancy packaging.

6. Applying Ski Wax the Right Way

If you’re new to hot waxing, there are plenty of beginner-friendly videos that walk you through it. Just remember: heat, drip, scrape, brush, and shred. You’ll of course also need a quality ski wax iron

Final Thoughts

Navigating the world of ski wax can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be.

Pick one of the top-rated ski waxes above, give it a shot, and see how it feels on your home slopes. If it glides well and holds up through a full day, you’ve likely found your go-to.

Don’t overthink it unless you’re venturing into very specific snow or weather conditions.

Stick with what works – and enjoy every buttery smooth turn. Happy skiing!

The Snow Chasers

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I wax my skis?

It depends on how much you ski and the snow conditions. For regular skiers, every 4–6 days on snow is a good rule of thumb. In abrasive, icy conditions, you might need to wax every 2–3 days. If your bases start looking white and dry, it’s time for a wax.

What's the difference between all-temp and temperature-specific ski wax?

All-temp wax works decently across a wide range of snow temps, making it ideal for casual skiers. Temperature-specific wax is tuned for certain ranges, giving you better performance if you know the conditions in advance. Racers and performance-focused skiers often carry multiple waxes.

Hot wax or rub-on – which is better?

Hot wax is the gold standard for speed, durability, and base protection. Rub-on wax is quick and easy for a last-minute boost but wears off much faster. If you ski often, hot wax is worth the effort.

Can I use snowboard wax on skis?

Yes. Most ski and snowboard waxes are the same formula, just marketed to different audiences. As long as the temperature range matches your needs, you’re good to go.

Does waxing really make skis faster?

Absolutely. Wax reduces friction between your bases and the snow, giving you smoother glide, better turn initiation, and more speed. It also helps protect the base material from oxidation and damage.

How do I know what temperature wax to use?

Check the snow temperature, not just the air temperature. Many skiers use a simple snow thermometer. If you’re unsure, all-temp wax is a safe choice, but for maximum performance, match the wax to the conditions.

Can I wax skis without an iron?

Yes, but it won’t be as effective. Rub-on wax and liquid wax can help in a pinch, but they wear off quickly. A proper hot wax with an iron penetrates the base and lasts much longer.

Should I scrape and brush after waxing?

Yes. Scraping removes excess wax so you’re gliding on the base, not clumps of wax. Brushing polishes the structure and helps with speed. Skipping this step can make skis feel grabby.
